As young people change jobs more often than older workers to think that training of older workers is a waste is incorrect thinking. If Older workers are employed up to the age of 65 then pension payout will decrease meaning that the younger employee will get more pension when they retire. So it is good all round.

I worked in personnel for 15 years and my colleague used to circle the ages on the C.V's/application forms when I asked him why he said if they are over 50 they are no good. I then explained why he was wrong - there is good and bad for the young and old for the following reasons.
OLD - has seen life and lived it, will be more than happy to be working and getting an income, doesnt normally have other committments that will mean they will be taking time off at short notice or indeed just not turning up for work cos they dont feel like it, the older generation tend to be more proud of what they do and how they do it, wont be going off on maternity/paternity leave .
YOUNG - want to learn a trade, may need the money to support themselves and/or family. looking for a long term position and not just for 'pin' money, want to progress though the stages of work and willing to put in the hours and labour to achieve this.
so you see that is just a little something on why we need both young and old in the workforce and after explaining this to my colleague he too had a different outlook on older people and realised that everyone has something to give......

As with everything, there are good and bad points and different points of view.

I think it is good as in the past, people have been deemed too old, in their mid forties, for new employment - which is disgraceful as we are now generally healthier and live longer lives.

The government also are finding it increasingly hard to fund pensions for those who have reached official retirement age.

And I guess a long service award would not be deemed ageist - just what it states "Long Service Award"

i don't think it is. It will mean a lot of people getting discriminated against behind closed doors it will make it much harder to prove.

Worst of all nothing is going to change, if a manager whats a Young person under 21 so they can pay them less, then that's who they are going to hire regardless. A lot of people will apply for jobs they have no chance of getting.

I know this because i was told in a job interview that i have to get to work by car and they would prefer someone younger because of the wage barrier. (I'm only 22 and I'm already discriminated against)

what people don't realise is it they want to bring a claim against an employer they have to pay for the legal advice (all of it) it's very expensive and very few cases can be proved.

In short the new policy is ridiculous!

It has been long overdue. The problem now is what action will you take when you think you have been discriminated against. How will you know they passed you by because your too old. You might be fully qualified for the position, but overlooked to hire a less qualified 16 year old for a cheaper wage.

I can see it from both sides. The company is not gonna want to take on an older person, spend loads of money training them for them to then retire in 5 years time. If they are gonna spend money on someone they want them to stay for a long time with the company.
But then I guess I feel for older people who actually do want to work and contribute to society etc.
