Yes, they will back away from somethiing that they find disconcerting. Next time you find an unsuspecting cat, get one of those string net bags made out of red plasticky string they sell oranges/satsumas etc in in supermarkets and pop one over the cat's head. Great fun! (no animals were hurt in researching this answer)

My cat does it all the time, but only when he is stuck or doesnt want to be picked up, its really weird! lol
