He was playing a joke on you. Alt-F4 is a keyboard shortcut to close the current window - if you have no windows open then it will then try to shut down Windows completely.
Another similar shortcut is CTRl-W - why don't you play a trick on HIM by telling him to go to www.hotmail.com and press CTRL-W to access a secret options page... all it will do is close his browser window, but he might not realise that, hehe

well, it's not for secret option definitly.
the truth is when you press ALT then F4 [or I'll say Alt + F4], it is for closing your active window or shortkey to shutdown selection window.
ex:
if you open Internet Explorer [IE] then you press Alt + F4, your IE will be closed.
If you open FreeCell [one of windows default installed games] then you press Alt + F4, your FreeCell will be closed.
~This Alt + F4 means just like you press 'X' button at your top right screen.
If you not active at any screen it will show you window if you click start then shut down.

i like different shortcuts as well - Microsoft Key + E = Explorer Microsoft Key + R = Run on the spot Microsoft Key + D = reduce All Ctrl + X = decrease Ctrl + C = replica Ctrl + V = Paste

It must close the open window and if there isn't any open window it should turn off your computer.
