We like to spend time in the front garden but nothing seems to do well apart from a shade loving rockery plant that while nice to look at for a month or so is not what you would chose to have all over your garden. Does anyone have any suggestions for shade loving plants that are easy to maintain and will provide a bit of colour over the summer months through autumn.

Thanks for looking

It depends on what state you live in but some safe ones besides the ones other people are correct in.....are tulips, Ivy, honey suckle, primrose, herbs, and I like winter green. winter green is a very small looking "shrub" type and it gets small white flowers in spring, red berries at Christmas, and the leaves turn different colors as the seasons change but does not loose its leaves. This way you never have a bare spot in your garden and it holds up well in most states and countries with very little care. Creeping Juniper is also a good choice, always stays looking neat and trimmed, and also keeps its color all year long.

Hello, ferns are great in the conditions you describe and look classy for most of the year, when conditions are warm enough something I like to do is plant house plants that enjoy shade (most of them do as they are found in the wild under deep shade in rainforests) and use them like exotic summer bedding they cost about the same aswell. Look for bargains that appear a bit tatty, they soon pep up with an unrestricted root run. you will have something green and lush in no time. All the best Jacko

Some very good and knowledgable answers all ready. I cannot add much to them so I will not bother to try.
However, having got the right plants you must ensure that the ground around them can sustain the growth with nutrients. A good fertilisor to use is GROWMORE. It is quite cheap to buy. Well before planting and in wet weather sprinlke the area with the growmore. keep it from directly going onto other plants etc.

It is difficult to get colour in shady situations.
~ Hostas will grow well in damp shade, have wonderful foliage to die for, and then have flowers - which to me are not as good as the foliage.
~Astilbes - will provide colour - but, like hostas, they do need to be kept DAMP.
~ Primroses - like damp shade. There's some colour.
DRY SHADE
is even more difficult, & therefore limited, but try:
~ Hellebors
~ Ivy
~ Aegopodium variegata (variegated ground elder - so be careful!)

You need to find plants that don't require alot of sunlight. I know hostas do well without sun. Boston ivy is another one. Good luck
