The Ganesha festival is celebrated all over India with pomp and glory. The festivities last for anywhere between a day to a week or a month. The lord is titled as the "remover of all obstacles" and is celebrated in every available corner of the country. Yet at the end of the festivities, the idol is immersed in water. Why?

In Hindu religious practices, as was the practice in ancient faiths, there is a cycle of events which is observed. God is said to be appearing to the people, at the appointed time for their worship and for His benediction. They welcome the festive seasons, when the season is said to be one of light and pleasurable, like Sankaranthi and Holi. In season of not so a warm weather, they are engaged in prayer and solemnity, which gives way to festivities, signifying the welcome chage in season. Ganesh Chaturti and many such festivals are an occasion for the people to rejoice at the change in the season. A welcome break from Monsoon. God (Lord Ganesha) is made of clay and worshipped. He is remembered as the God who removes obstacles in our way; after the monsoon, they expect from Him a bountiful yield from the field, from out of which he was made. After the festival is over, he is sent back to the elements from where he had come. The element of cycle is seen in all the local festivals. They make horses and other local deities from out of the clay. Once the festival is over, the deities are immersed in water, with much pomp and solemnity, as befitting them. This writer has heard of the eagles accompanying the idols taken out in procession, to the pond where they were to be immersed. Immersion of Ganesh idol is part of such a tradition. There is a book written by a famous English writer entitled "Holy Grail" where he had given several instances world over where the cycle of idols being made and again sent back to the elements from which they had been made.

Ganesha idols were traditionally made of clay. After the worship the power of the Idol increase. It cannot be left without the proper ritualistic worship every day. This is not possible considering the large number of poojas performed .Even in the house hold regular systematic Pooja cannot performed to the Idol. Neglect of ganpathi would bring in adverse results. so the idol is taken to flowing water or the sea and immersed in it with the prayer to the lord to come back next year once again

The concept of Ganesha in India is he is the combined form of Prakrit & purush. Prakruti means visual forms-like nature, human body etc. And purusha is internal enargy -it is soul or atma. So Ganesha is the symbol of every human beaing and also hole univers.
He is worshipping as Vigna vinashaka as you told as "remover of all obstacles" because First we have to understand body consept and soul consept Then only we can be secsus in our life.
After worshipping Ganesha we are calling it pratime it is again
body or as I told prakruti, immerssing in water see again water is also a form of nature it is prakruti. So whole thing had a philosophical background We can understand the body formeted by nature and it dessolving in nature. But the soul it is the power is not distroable it can take another body so Ganesha is comming for next year

I am answering with regards to someone here who is interested in rationalising god. First of all, He is God bcos He is out of the reach of our senses and understanding; He is everything and nothing, everywhere and nowhere, in everybody and in nobody. How do you rationally prove such an existence?
Secondly, do you personally have rational evidence to everything? Have u cut open your head and seen ur own brain or seen ur heart? Then is it right to say you don't have a heart or a brain? If you talk of seeing in a X-ray or a scan, that is not something that you are personally seeing; you are beleiving only in something that someone else is showing. Is it not irrational? And if seeing what someone else is showing is rational according to you, why don't you apply the same to God?
Thirdly, since god is everywhere and in everything, He's also in the fly and also in you who is asking this question! Why should he swat it?

The reason behind is the emotional Blind Belief in god. The lord of the "remover of all obstacles" cant even remove his own obstacles, he cant even remove fly from his nose, let alone removing the obstacles of the others. this is irrational.

The belief in god must be rational and must be proved by the senses, building actions on this believe will be free from contradictions.

If you want to discuss more about the rationale believe please post a comment on this page i will try to answer it if i can.
