Sounds like a bad starter. Have you car checked at a local shop. Some do free inspections and estimates.

Turn on headlights to check the battery. If they are dim, you need to jump the battery. If you still have trouble, it may be a fusable link. The wires going to the starter have little plastic pieces on them and those are fuses (fusable links), other than that, jump the starter to see if the drive is engaging. If it is and it turns over when you jump the selinoid on the starter, then you'll want to take a test light and see if you've got juice at the selinoid when the key is in the crank position. If not, check all fuses in fuse box and the fusable link. You can jump the selinoid to get you on the road, just fix it when you get home. Good luck.

Get the battery checked. If you jump start it and don't have to put on the headlights you can drive it to an Auto parts store and get it
checked. It should run fine off the alternator as long as alot of accessories are not on. But check your fuses first. You may have one burned out.or a starter relay may be bad. The relays on these older cars are on the firewall near Where your wipers are

I've seen the lights on the dash come on with a low battery. So it could be a bad battery or alternator.

It could be a bad starter.

If the engine turns over and it isn't starting it could be allot more problems.
fuel pump/fuel filter
distributor/rotor
wires/plugs/
plus so much more.

Could be the battery doesn't have enough power for the starter - the lights you see need very little power. Give it an hour or so on the battery charger to see if that helps.

I had the same problem. My battery was completely dead. After I charged it, it barely held a charge. I had to get a new one.

could be the battery still -- might have enough electric for lights but not for the starter --

You have to turn the key a bit further, the first click only turns the power on, not the motor.
