Fire fox is great, but don't take away your I.E. As some things will only work in I.E. All you do is once you have installed firefox it will ask you if you would like this to be your default browser, just click yes and all is ok. heres some detail for you. P.S you may as well get Thunderbird too, I find it better than outlook express.

Browsers and E-mail programmes.

Can recommend Firefox for browsing and has many safety features installed and is self updating.

A Better Web Experience
Firefox 1.5 has an intuitive interface and blocks viruses, spyware, and popup ads. It delivers Web pages faster than ever. And it’s easy to install and import your favorites. Packed with useful features like tabbed browsing, Live Bookmarks, and an integrated Search bar, Firefox will change the way you experience the Web, for the better.
Faster Browsing
Enjoy quick page loading as you navigate back and forward in a browsing session. Improvements to the engine that powers Firefox deliver more accurate display of complex Web sites, support for new Web standards, and better overall performance.
Automatic Updates
The new Software Update feature makes it easy to get the latest security and feature updates to Firefox. Firefox automatically downloads these small updates in the background and prompts you when they are ready to be installed.
Tabbed Browsing
Use tabbed browsing to open multiple Web pages in a single browser window, and quickly flip back and forth. Drag and drop open tabs to keep related pages together.
Improved Pop-up Blocking
Firefox’s built-in pop-up blocker has been enhanced to block more unwanted pop-up and pop-under ads.
Integrated Search
Tap into the power of the Web’s most popular search engines with the built-in Search bar, and easily add new engines.
Stronger Security
Firefox keeps you more secure when you’re browsing the Web, closing the door on spyware, worms, and viruses. The Firefox community of developers and security experts works around the clock to monitor security issues and release updates to better protect you.
Clear Private Data
Protect your privacy with the new Clear Private Data tool. With a single click, you can delete all personal data, including browsing history, cookies, Web form entries and passwords.
Live Bookmarks
Stay up to date with your favorite Web sites and blogs. Use Live Bookmarks that update themselves automatically with the latest content from the Web.
Accessibility
Firefox 1.5 delivers easier navigation for everyone, including those who are visually or motor-impaired. Firefox is the first browser to support DHTML accessibility, which, when enabled by Web authors, allows rich Web applications to be read aloud. Users may navigate with keystrokes rather than mouse clicks, reducing the tabbing required to navigate documents such as spreadsheets. Firefox 1.5 (Windows version) is also the first browser to meet US federal government requirements that software be easily accessible to users with physical impairments.
Customize Firefox
Select new button controls for your toolbars, install extensions to add new features, or change the look of your browser with themes - the way Firefox looks and works is under your control.
Next Generation Web Support
Innovative new Web applications and services deliver a richer Web experience. Support for open Web standards in Firefox ensures you can get the most out of this emerging class of Web-based tools.

Built-in RSS capabilities, powerful quick search, spell check as you type, global inbox, deleting attachments and advanced message filtering round out Thunderbird's modern feature set.
Junk Mail Filters
Each email you receive passes through Thunderbird's leading-edge junk mail filters. Each time you mark messages as spam, Thunderbird improves its filtering so you can spend more time reading the mail that matters. Thunderbird will also use your mail provider's spam filters to keep junk mail out of your inbox.
Anti-Phishing Protection
Thunderbird protects you from increasingly common email scams—also known as “phishing”—which try to fool you into handing over your passwords and other personal information. Thunderbird will tell you when it thinks a message might be a scam.
Advanced Security

You cannot uninstall IE. Besides that, if somehow you did, your computer will be screwed. Some people think that they can actually uninstall IE, but you can't, unless you have a special program to do it with. Just set Firefox as your default browser, and use it as much as possible.

United States Computer Emergency Readiness Team:
"There are a number of significant vulnerabilities in technologies related to the IE domain/zone security model,...ActiveX (etc)...It is possible to reduce exposure to these vulnerabilities by using a different web browser"

I use FIrefox and agree with everyone here so far. Don't uninstall IE, some websites or even just one feature on a website may only be IE compatible so you do still need it. Choose Firefox as your default and only use IE when you need it.

I hope you enjoy Firefox!

Well, you don't have to uninstall Internet Explorer just because you want to install Firefox! You just have to install Firefox, then switch between the two browsers according to your needs.
Hope my answer helps. =)

You can't and do not un-install it. IE is integrated into Windows. What you'll want to do is install Firefox and when it launches it should ask you if you want to make Firefox your default browser - say YES. From that point on, when you click a link, Firefox will open instead of IE. Then of course if you want to just open a site on your own you will click the Firefox link instead of IE. So you don't remove IE, you just stop using it.

I recommend installing an alternative browser and not use IE unless you really have to.

Personally I recommend the Opera Browser which is super fast, safe and fully customisable. I use it at home, work and on my mobile phone and swear to it. It's brilliant!

But off course Firefox is also better than IE and you simply just install the alternative browser and use it instead of IE. IE is part of the Operating System and you will not be able to get rid of it completely, so just leave it unless you really have to use it.

Good luck ;)

No, you don't need to get rid of your internet explorer, in fact you shouldn't because some websites only work on IE.

I'm easily confused by technology, and when my husband installed Firefox I couldn't understand why I could no longer access my bank details, and Asda online.

I have to switch back for them or they just never open.
