If you mean the make-up doesn't suit her, which would make sense for your question, then just happen to say something like, "hey what do you think of this or that color of eyeshadow? I think it would look awesome on you" This way you aren't directly saying you don't like the makeup. I deal with this often and more often than not won't have the opportunity or am not a close enough friend to say anything. There's one friend that's worn this awful brick colored lipstick for years, along with a haircut too short for her----I wish soooo much I could speak up somehow. People need to hear the truth--I like it when people are nicely honest with me.

I'm not entirely sure what it is you're worried about telling this person. Naturally such information would help in formulating an appropriate response.

However, generally it is always best to try to tell someone the truth in a tactful way. Use empathy to the best of your ability.

Just remember, empathy is not how you would feel if you were in that person's situation, it is how they feel, as the person they are, in the situation they are in. It's a fine line.

I take it u ment the make up DOESNTsuit her??

Why not try recommending how she does her make up or invite her round for a girly eve, bottle of wine, slushy movie and giving her a make over?

If all else fails just take the plunge and be honest with her, i expect she would prefer that rather than people laughing at her behind her back! x

So why would telling her that hurt her feelings? It sounds like you want to give her a compliment on her new look. You don't have to say anything about how she used to dress, but a nice "I really like your new style" isn't going to offend her. If there is something specific you want to complement on, then do so. As long as you don't compare it to the "old" look, then you would be safe.

Sometimes you can't avoid hurting someone. It's all in how you aproach them, and your attitude. It also depends heavily on what it is you need to tell them. If it's a friend, family member or colleague, hopefully they will respect your honesty, despite how hurtful the news may be. Hope that helps.

Then what do you want to tell her? if she used to look like a scruff but has now changed her image and your saying it suits her you wouldnt be hurting her feelings if you said she looked good - its a compliment.
