The "Windows XP" screen comes up for a few seconds followed by a flash of the "Blue screen of death" at which point the computer simply re-boots. I've tried starting in safe mode but it then starts listing loads of System32 files before re-starting. Any ideas?

When trying to start in "Safe Mode", after the list of system32 file extensions appear the system just re-boots.
As to the BSOD, there isn't enough time to see what it says, it appears for about 1 second!

"Last known good configuration" doesn't work either, and there are no floppies or CD's in the pc.

If you don't have the original Windows installation disk or if it a dreaded emachine rescue disk then you have a problem. It means that you can not even re-install Windows or use their recovery console. This may well have happened if an update was being installed and it hadn't completed when you turned the machine off.
This option is not a good one and might only work:

The best option is to get the original XP disk and use it's recovery features, better still get a 2nd hard drive and install windows on that and transfer your data from one to the other ensuring that yo have a good anti-virus programme installed.
If you need to access your files in a hurry I would get a live linux disk (kubuntu is good or PCLinuxOS) so you can at least use your machine. If you know anything about DOS you can use a copy of this and copy your important data to disk before trying anything radical.

Doesn't sound good... possibly some piece of your hardware just flipped out and died. It happens.
Can you tell what's the last System32 file loaded before it restart, or does it just flash by?
To know more about the BSOD error, you have to tell us exactly what it says! It's hard to believe, but the information in there is actually meaningful :-) especially the error code(s).

BSOD is shown when there is a memory problem/hardware problem have you installed any new pieces of hardware? or recently updated your drivers as this could be the problem.. before reformatting go to the last known good configuration option instead of safe mode as this can restore the pc to before it got the dodgy software... it is a bit tempramental though..

Either a virus, or the registry is corrupted. A Microsoft techie may fix it online, but they want money. This is why people back things up, huh? If you have some utility disks, or made one (a bootable one) when you first got your computer, try them.

check the hard drive, if it does not work, get a bootable cd and boot from it, you might need to re-install windows.
