Is your question about Japanese living in Japan ? I am assuming your question is for Japanese living everywhere. Also assuming that Club does not mean the "Disco".. etc "Entertainment Club", but general club.

Japanese in America, an example of a club in foreing countries, as with all foreing students clubs or associations, they try to bring all the Japanese living in that place together as well as to exchange their culture with the culture of the foreing land. That should answer your question "Why do they participate in club activites?"

Clubs provide a forum for members to gather, meet, interact, play sport such as football, or it could be as simple as cooking a meal and sharing it with all the members.
