It has to do with our laws being based on Christianity.

It's simply a law, and it could be changed by the people if enough were interested in doing it. However, don't most people feel one is enough? (a joke). Actually there's no good reason I can think of that makes it any of the governments business. You could live together with a dozen wives or husbands and do anything you want, but can't make it a legal marriage.
Same applies to gays, right?

It has to do with honor and committment, as opposed to a person living like a pig, stuffing himself with wives and sex into oblivion, like food.
