Kid - to deceive for fun, nap - to steal. One assumes that the first kidnapping was a merry prank, and then someone had the bright idea that, perhaps, they could make a few quid out of it. Yes, I know, factual but boring.

Because kidnapping isn't actual what the term means(napping kids) it was originated by something else. Maybe stealing goats????

Checking in Webster's, it doesn't say anything about it relating to children, it only says abducting a person.
