They don't, but they will stay underground for longer stretches in the winter - see this link (about 4th paragraph down)

i wish they'd hibernate all year, i don't like them very much and for good reason. Last year i was coming home from work at about 23.00 and a badger ran out in front of my moped, i ended up in hospital with 5 broken toes and a broken ankle! The badger just limped off.

Why would they go specifically to the U.K.? One would think that crossing the water would be too much of a problem.

french badgers dont and irish ones wouldn't be seen dead in the uk...unlike english ones of course

No they emigrate and hibernate in warmer climes :P

yes they do, for the duration of winter, about 3-5months i think.
