For that price range, get the Shure SM58. You really can't go wrong there, and you can find good deals on the internet because it's such a popular mic.

Right, everyone's mentioned the Shure SM58 but Shure actually make an exeptionally good quality vocal mic in your price range called the PG58 (PG stands for Performance Gear). I use mine for all live work and actually it's consistantly out performed other people's older SM58s in terms of dynamic response. From memory it cost around the £40 mark but don't quote me on that. Don't buy an SM57 as they are designed for miking instruments like guitars. They're readily available in the UK from most music shops and if you have a good voice the PG58 will be the business.

my brother Mark the Engineer
told me ( and look at his website in case you need a gig!)
Well an audix om6 or om 7 would do the
trick[expensive] but a bog standard shure sm 58
would suffice
A shure beta 58 has better feedback rejection and
less handling noise but probably not noticable on a
small PA
He then adds - Anyway I don't really know anything I am going
deaf???

Contact him if you want to know more as he is a sound engineer as well as being a preformer then when you are ready come and see us at

If it’s a mic for live vocal work, then the Shure SM 58 is the one. It’s the industry standard used by everyone. It’ll cost you £74.99 from:-

SM58 is the business for live work, but you won't find a new one for £50. Get a used one (ebay?) or look at the Peavey PV [if they still make it] which had a good reputation. But really, just get an SM58 whatever!

Definitely Shure SM 58 (round mesh bobble end) or 57 (no bobble).
