A lot of people are not comfortable walking up to someone and starting a conversation. With chatting on yahoo you can be what ever you want to be. If you don't meet the other person they never have to own up to their mistakes and if you get upset with someone you just don't chat with them anymore. It is kind of like finding a safe haven in a world where a lot of things aren't safe anymore.

I enjoy it and only answer without consulting Wiki or any other
source, although I did once, only to get the date of a certain
musical release (1933). Apart from that, I fully enjoy it as it
keeps my brain ticking which is very important to me since
I have little choice of physical activities. Perhaps if you can
consider the physically impaired, Yahoo is a Godsend. I
have a broken vertebrae (L5) and several pinched disks
from there down, and must wear an immobilizing corset
with steel rods to keep me upright, otherwise my body is
somewhat like a puppet. I can cook, wash, walk slowly with
a cane up to about 400 yards, but with no sloping roads
before my heart starts pounding. All was caused by hefty
sporting activities some time ago, perhaps a little stupid
but after four surgeries and very little relief, Yahoo is an
excellent therapy which often makes me wonder how many
of us are in Yahoo because of similar reasons. I have answered
several questions where I noticed signs of physical impairment
(between lines) but hardly any clearly admitted. I hope that
Yahoo read this and realize the good that they are affording
more people than expected. And I wish to thank you for asking
the question and provoking me to let the cat out of the bag.
It has done me good - cheers, Iain Ritchie

I've lived with the right one for 17 years, we are married and have teen aged children. I don't feel the need to go out and look for "whatever".

Why do I enjoy Y! Answers? I can do it in the comfort of my own home. I learn new things that the people I know r/w doesn't know. It's entertaining and interactive, the TV is barely entertaining and not interactive. (Unless you count zapping through channels.) Most people around me work full days and I'm retired, that means that I have plenty of time on my hands.

I believe most people use it as a way to pass the time rather than anything else, those boring moments at home or work when there is nothing else to do. Also answering a question and helping people find out something they really want to know can really bring a smile to your face.

excellent question -- you lost 5 points by asking but you made many people think and feel. voila. for my part -- and most of us will have their own unique reasons -- it is anonymous therefore there is no criticism of right and wrong answer -- it is simply an answer and you get it off your chest without being judged. very important. while in man2man or two way conversations --you are reluctant to speak your mind for fear of being criticized with negative comments either in words or in looks. that is one reason that works for me and why i am here early to answer some intelligent and less intelligent questions for the fun of it. I do my share. voila. enjoy.

strangers can be very hostile and unfriendly if you just tried to walk up and start chatting to them
here on yahoo you don*actually meet the people but you can interact with people from all walks of life any where virtually in the world, and everyone knows the rules and guide lines when communicating with one another, its safe easy and addictive form of communicating without the fear of getting your head bashed in

Are you refering to those who ask questions that a quick Google or Wikipedia would answer?

Honestly - I have no idea.

I think people should research things themselves first and ask questions only when they want an opinion.
