Cough treatment using Grapes
Grapes are one of the most effective home remedies for the treatment of a cough. Grapes tone up the lungs and act as an expectorant, relieving a simple cold and cough in a couple of days. A cup of grape juice mixed with a teaspoon of honey is advised for cough relief.

Cough treatment using Almonds
Almonds are useful for dry coughs. Seven kernels should be soaked in water overnight and the brown skin removed. They should then be ground well to form a fine paste. A quantity of twenty grams each of butter and sugar should then be added to the paste. This paste should be taken in the morning and evening.

Cough treatment using Onion
The use of raw onion is valuable in a cough. This vegetable should be chopped fine and the juice extracted from it. One teaspoon of the juice should then be mixed with one teaspoon of honey and kept for four or five hours-it will make an excellent cough syrup and should be taken twice daily. Onions are also useful in removing phelgm. A medium-sized onion should be crushed, the juice of one lemon added to it, and then one cup of boiling water poured on it. A teaspoon of honey can be added for taste. This remedy should be taken two or three times a day.

Cough treatment using Raisins
A sauce prepared from raisins is also useful in a cough. This sauce is prepared by grinding 100 gm of raisins with water. About 100 gm of sugar should be mixed with it and the mixture heated. When the mixture acquires a sauce-like consistency, it should be preserved. Twenty grams should be taken at bedtime daily.

Cough treatment using Aniseed
Aniseed is another effective remedy for a hard dry cough with difficult expectoration. It breaks up the mucus. A tea made from this spice should be taken regularly for treating this condition.

It sounds as if he has postnasal drip. this could be caused by an underlying defect in his sinuses ie: even an untreated minor sinus infection- Or it could be a result of various allergies (has he been tested)?- Does he run even a low grade fever? Is he asthmatic? Does he have Cystic Fibrosis? Does he get many ear infections? Does he still have his tonsils and adenoids? Is he healthwise 'normal' in every other sense? Does he experience 'night terrors'?

I know, I know- too many questions; and we aren't supposed to answer a question WITH a question. Sorry about that.

So I shall start with the most common offender here... If this could be an allergy, please immediately change his linens and pillow too. (You can get a great hypoallegenic pillow at Sears- bed linens too)- I had to do this for my youngest daughter as she was coughing also; and pretty much as you have descibed above- except she sounded like a seal! If his mattress is an old one you might want to purchase a new one; (once again buy a hypoallergenic one).

Costly but effective too.
AND I would vacuum his room, thoroughly, every day, while he is at school- or at least away from his room; giving it at least 2 hours to 'settle' before he reenters it.
I don't know where you live, but if the changing of the seasons would have an effect on him, please also include a vaporizer when it cools off outside- to keep the humidity up. This will keep his sinuses and also his eustachion tubes (ears) draining if they need to. (And they absolutely 'need' to, or you will also have chronic infections in your boy).
Use "STEAM DISTILLED" water only- (not just plain old distilled either)
And if this all continues, please consult another doctor. (Yours seems to have stock in the Robitussin Group)!
Personally, I don't much care for a doctor that cannot make a diagnosis, but wants to throw medicines at symptoms anyway. What does this say about his ability to diagnose? Isn't that what they are supposed to do???
Your body coughs for a reason! Why cover it up with medications that might only be adding to his problems?
Take care.
Good luck...
...And God Bless you both!
Anne

If that little ones doctor is not concerned, get another one now. If you have friends with children, ask them about their doctors. Some hospitals have referral services and may help. My son had suffered since birth. I moved away and the second time he saw the new doctor, he knew how to treat my son. I moved back home and again problems arose and the doctor would not help. My son was in a deep, deep depression at the age of four because the doctor did not help. He went to a different doctor and was diagnosed with sinus problems. Sons first doctor insisted children at the age of four do not have sinus problems. Fooled him.

Don't ever go to the doc or buy over-the-counter cough syrups.

Try this - a teaspoon of whole black peppers, 1 spoonful of dry ginger shreds, 1 teaspoon of cumin seeds - boil them with a glass of water in a steel vessel, until the color changes to black or reduces to half a glass. Distil and give him 5-10 minutes before going to bed.

For emergency in the middle of the night, keep this decoction in a flask or a mixture of powdered black pepper and honey to feed him. His cough's root cause would be taken care of herbally and both of you can enjoy peaceful nights.

Another Indian remedy would be to drink a glass of lukewarm milk with a pinch of turmeric powder.

Try an expectorant medicine or herb which will increase the expulsion of tracheal or bronchial mucus through expectoration or coughing. In over-the-counter preparations, guaifenesin is often used. The effectiveness of expectorants in cough medicines has been questioned; however, water is an effective expectorant and drinking adequate water thins the mucus and enables it to be expelled more easily.

Herbal remedies considered to be expectorants include the following:

Aniseed (Pimpinella anisum),
Balm of Gilead (Populus gileadensis),
Balsam of Peru (Myroxylon perierae),
Balsam of Tolu (Myroxylon toluifera),
Bloodroot (Sanguinaria canadensis),
Cannabis (Cannabis Sativa),
Cardamom (Elettaria caradamomum),
Coltsfoot (Tussilago farfara),
Comfrey (Symphytum officinale),
Elderflower (Sambucus nigra),
Elecampane (Inula helenium),
Garlic (Allium sativum),
