I think Muslims inadvertently got themselves a bad reputation simply because of a few zealous kooks. Every religion has them: from the drunk guy on the street corner telling everybody they're going to hell to some of these downright crazy cult leaders raping young girls and stuff. So taking into account the events that happened over the last few years, Muslims became an easy target. I know some people who are Muslim and they are very kind and gentle people, nothing like the crazies featured on CNN. Evil knows no discrimination, it can be found anywhere in anyone regardless of their religious beliefs, race, whatever. And I think it's sad that the media hypes up this type of hate, especially when this country has tried so hard to put an end to racism and discrimination in the course of its history.

I lived in muslim countries for 17 years and there are plenty of individual muslims for whom I have the greatest respect. However, this is not because of their religion.
I find that in general muslims seem to have a very weak grasp of what I could call the moral nature of humanity. If it's not forbidden in the Koran, there is no reason not to do something, for example. Islam also seems to be linked with authoritarianism, which leads to societies where nobody is willing to stick his neck out, but is always looking for approval from above.

My view is that Muslims are as good or as bad as any other religious community, but they are yet to reform in terms of their world view and tolerance, like Christianity and Hinduism who were once fundametalists but have since come a long way yet having a long way ahead.

Scripture should be comprehended, not merely recited without comprehension, in a language an individual could understand.

They certainly need an internal reformation.

I think that they are misunderstood. An entire religion & culture shouldn't be maligned because of a few fanatics. There are fanatical Christians too. The point is that God is love. All major religions believe in a benevolent Creator whether you want to call Him God or Allah or Buddha. The most basic teaching of any religion is love for God & for one another. Respect for human life. Some people will try to twist scriptures around to meet their own distorted views. God does not want us to hurt each other & anyone who goes around destroying life & saying their God told them to do so is either lying, ignorant or insane. Some people are just hateful & intolerant of anyone who is different. They'll look to the Bible (or whatever their holy book happens to be) & interpret it to mean that God wants them to hate & destroy anyone who is different. Which is BS! But it's nothing new. All throughout history men have destroyed each other supposedly in the name of religion. Talk about missing the point!!!!
