Parfum according to everyone I've ever spoken to. I haven't read it and wouldn't read it in German, at least not at first.

Patrick Susskind (yes it's Perfume in English and a movie now)

Oh and The Reader, can't remember the author but it's about a teenage boy who becomes the lover of a former Nazi prison guard...If you check Amazon.de they probably have it in both English and German so you can figure it out.

I don't know but I read a two book set that was published two months before Edgar Rice Burroughs published his Tarzan series called Jan of the Jungle. Because of the situation and the distance involved the writer Otis Adelbert Klein never received a copywright infringement and died penniless. But the books were actually very good. About a boy kidnapped from rich parents and raised in a cage in South America with a female orangutan.

There are one or two suggestions I could give, but I really need to know a bit more about the person you're buying for i.e. do they prefer crime fiction, fantasy, real-life drama, do they have an interest in recent history or a particular concern for the environment? All these would be helpful in sorting something out.

Crazy by Benjamin Lebert is really popular, but is more aimed at a teenager / young adult age group.

I read books in German, but tend to just read the translations of books originally written in English, my bad.
