This is difficult not knowing the full atmosphere and background.
Approach 1) As each rumour surfaces face her up and ask her reason or ground for spreading it. Ask if she is jealous of you or what her reason is for using this type of mean method.
Approach 2) She could have a sad or tumultuous background be it in marriage/partner or home life and if you have a pleasant and bright attitude and therefore well liked by your colleagues she could be jealous of that but cannot find the way to grasping it for herself. Kindness and gentleness, though initially against the grain, would draw her out of that mindset and in the process could bind her to you as a very loyal friend for the trouble you have taken in spite of her very negative attitude to you.
Often we wish to be understood whereas we need to understand then to be understood will follow.
Often the rewards of taking time and trouble over someone elses problems are far greater than meeting fist with fist.

What I like to do is come up with some really raunchy stories about myself, and tell 'em. For example, I have one coworker convinced that I am a transexual. I still laugh aloud whenever someone askes me if it's true. I tell them the story about how I lied and why. My favorite one is about how I know my husband cheats on me...and that I let him. Give that poor gossiping soul something to talk about, and put some creativity in it. And then sit back and laugh at the obsurdity of it all and thank the gods that you have a more interesting life that what she does. Whoever gossips is usually jealous of the one they gossip about. It's called not having a life.
If all else fails, go to a hunting store, buy some racoon pee, and very carefully, put a few drops of it on her clothing, or on her chair. Stinky..peeew... she'll go around stinking nasty all the time and won't ever now why. Boy, if you had a way to pour the pee in her car.....
By the way, anyone that would betray you...be glad that you found out...and not counting onthem as friends. Look at it as a blessing, and hey, why don't you try thanking her, too? Say someting like... I dunno...something like "Ya, know...if it weren't for you, I would have never been able to figure out what is wrong with my personality. Thank you for pointing out my flaws, and for telling everyone about them so now I am more aware of my faults and can concentrate and changing myself fr the better." then be sure to add "I hope that this won't make you not want to be my friend anymore."
Too bad we can't get her to break out on huge boils everytime she tries to start crapola.
Oh, where is Mrs. PiggleWiggle when you need her?

What a friend of mine did was to make something up about their friend (friend was in on it) and had some fun watching the gossip spread it around. Have you anything on them? Rise above it, tell them to get a life.
Hope all goes well, as you are better than them.

You ahve given this person power in your head!
Why don't you think that others know and see exactly what you do?
If you must work with her, just say "Ohhh" alot, don't join in her gossip.

Feed her BS and deny it later.
