When I went into the greengrocers yesterday I asked him for 5 pounds of potatoes, he said to me we only sell kilos, so i said ok then i will have 5 pounds of kilos please, and he threw me out! Why?

Because you appear sarcastic to someone who is very serious about everything or not in a good mood. Try to analyze "Ok then I will have 5 pounds of kilos". When we he already said that he only sell a by the kilo only. Or he's the type that doesn't want to compute or convert.
Maybe he's just in a bad mood.

Why the hell should we be made to buy in kilos, it's always been pounds in the UK and so it should have stayed - unfortunately we have been sold out and betrayed to Europe! I expect that he thought you were taking the mickey! However, there is a serious side to this - the law is such now that had he sold the potatoes in pound measures he is open to prosecution resulting in a fine or imprisonment! So much for being a free country!

He seems abit of a tit.I hate that they do kilos and not pounds i dont understand it at all dont blame yourself over it he should have expalined it to you more clearly instead of chucking you out.How are we supposed to know what there on about if they dont explain.
