Hmmm.. thats a good question. In my opinion, if people are good to you, they deserve you to respect each individual act of kindness they offer you, and deserve some sort of fundamental respect for their humanity. Everyone probably deserves general respect and that you try not to do anything to deliberately hurt them.
More importantly, what the world and you deserve is for you to take all the steps necessary to make yourself feel better, or at least to understand the reasons you feel bitter and frustrated, and if you choose you want to, to limit the effects of those emotions in your life. Certainly, if you get abuse for helping people, then what they deserve is probably an appropriate response from you so that they can get their behaviour in check, or failing that, a kick up the bum. Although, don't take this as gospel, you may get fired or summat.
Don't help them if they are just using you as an easy way to solve their problems without taking any responsibilty themselves. If at all possible, point them in the right direction and let them do the job themselves.

Of course you should let the ungrateful wretches suffer; self-sacrifice is a poor backwards value. If people aren't compensating you fairly for your efforts, then by all means, go on strike! Begging and attempting to make you feel guilty in order to trick you into to giving them what they haven't earned is immoral. Every penny you've made has been by virtue of your own hard work, and every piece of advice you have ought to be bought from you, as if it were gold.

I don't think you should change who you are but i think you should stop being soft. There's a difference between being helpful and being a push over. If someone is being a tit after you've just bent over backwards for them, then stand up to them and tell them they're being ungrateful and if they are going to be like that then why should you help them?! There's nothing wrong with being kind, you just need to learn how to stand up to people who try to walk all over you and take you for granted.

If its in your personality to be kind and helpful then why change it just because of some abusive people? Don't let them influence who you really are.

You need to find out who you are and be yourself...be respectful and cordial with all, and when people show you how they want to be treated, then you take your cue from how they treat you. (of course, never being violent, belligerent, verbally abusive)
