Great question!! Indeed, I believe we need mediocrity to recognize greatness. I often wounder, if the above is true, then what about the super super great? Those 1 in a billion that shine extra bright... Is there a equally lesser that contrast it as well? if so what would it be like? Trippppy;)

Yes. It's the comparison that makes you recognize excellence when you encounter it. The movie "Amadeus" was a great example of this contrast. One composer Salieri (I'm probably misspelling it but it's something like that) worked as hard as he could & still could only be a mediocre composer who would be forgotten unlike Mozart who was a genius, touched with greatness, even from a young age and whose music would survive & be loved forever. With any artistic endeavour you can always tell the difference between someone who is just passable & someone who is extraordinary.

Yes, I belive it all has to do with relativity. You need some form of measure. Excellence is measured by mediocrity, or vice versa.
