I was informed to make the video file MPEG4 (or MP4) or whatever... I just don't know where to get that (if possibly, free) program.

You don't need anything but iTunes. It's enough to import all the videos into iTunes app. and they will sync with your iPod just like it's your music. When you import videos into iTunes, they will appear under "Videos" tab. Also it's recommended to download recent iTunes version: 7.0 for windows or 7.1 if you use Mac.

go to the itunes music store. then buy your video, or you can just download from dvds, the plug up your ipod and it syncs. easy as that.
