Don't really want to go as a nurse or a landgirl, but cant find the right style summer dress in the shops at the moment (was hoping to do the glam 1940's belted dress with wide-brim hat).

I don't know were you are located, so I am going on a whim.
Try consignment shops or Goodwill stores. you will want to get a dress that is A-line with the length at your knees. Wide brimmed hat anywhere. Don't forget the fishnet stockings and a pair of 2 inch thick pump for shoes. They look like Mary -Janes with a heel. Goodwills are good places plus very cheap. Just make sure you get the clothes cleaned before wearing. You will also need a small black, patent leather clasped purse with a little strap. You might also want to wear gloves. The party sounds fun. Good Luck..

Hello, My daughter was born on D-Day, every year we have a party for her and D-Day celebrations too. If you look on Ebay and put in 1940's in dresses etc you will come across some lovely dresses, a few friends came in 1940's dresses and look lovely, we had land girls, a 1940's cooking lady, a 1940's veteran also joined us for the day, and to top it off, my husband flew his 1940's airplane around the house. Perfect day!

Good luck and enjoy it, we did.

Check the vintage clothing section on Ebay, there are some really beautiful dresses and wide brimmed hats on there, very glamorous. Have a great time.

Women were in the forces too!!! Go as a WREN, or something. I would check out smaller fancy dress places, or maybe WW2 re-enactment groups, may have something.
