We've got two - on a 1 acre property that backs to a forest preserve in the midwest US. Mostly, deer resistance is the priority here. Plants are all perrenials or bulbs and include daffodils of many types, crocus, virginia bluebells, peonies, alliums, Russian sage, Japanese kerria, hydrangea, irises of several colors, Oregon fleabane, a few ornamental grasses, mums, toad lily, bleeding heart, Japanese painted fern, ostrich fern, astilbe, canterbury bells, purple coneflower, red and purple monarda, several sedums, phlox, etc, etc. These are only some of what comes to mind without looking! There is color all year round from early spring until frost, and the list doesn't include the woodland wildflowers we've added in the wooded portions of the lot outside the official gardens. Next on the agenda is digging up the lawn in the back and planting native grasses and wildflowers for a woodland savannah type area amonst the oak and hickory trees, and an herb garden outside the kitchen door.
