It's only because video games haven't quite broken into the mainstream media as acceptable forms of adult entertainment yet. Originally arcade games were geared towards kids and teenagers, but as they've evolved, many games are intended to be played by gamers 17 and over.
It's a socially hypocritical situation that says playing video games makes you mindless, unintelligent, or immature, while watching TV or a movie at home is considered perfectly normal. Watching TV involves merely sitting there absorbing audio and visual input and processing the information in your mind.
Most video games involve registering audio and video input to a sharper, more critical level than a movie would. It requires you to process that input at a faster rate, decide what to do with that input, and react to it. Some studies argue that children who play a healthy level of video games actually develop better sensory skills and tactile dexterity.
I think more and more every year, society's view of video games is improving. Slowly, but changing for the better nonetheless. It's also interesting to note that those of us who grew up playing video games will mostly continue to do so in the future (I'm 22 and don't plan on stopping any time soon!), so before long, I'm sure it'll be no uncommon occurance to witness kids and adults alike playing video games as often as you see people watching reality shows today.

Of course it's not weird, as has been said a lot here. People just need to follow the idea of don't knock it 'til you've tried it.
I think there are video games out there for just about anyone to enjoy, if they had the understanding and/or patience to play it (i.e. my grandparents probably wouldn't). Also, as far as the book comparison: many of the best stories I've "experienced" in my lifetime have been from video games. They can be just as much or more effective than a movie, heck even as effective or more so than a book. I think video games are the ultimate in story telling honestly. Final Fantasy games have the most intricate and beautifully told stories, as an example. F.E.A.R. was a more intense, scary, and exciting experience than any scary movie I've seen. Many video games are becoming a lot like interactive movies, and RPGs (Role Playing Games) can be a lot like interactive books. You beat a great game, and it should give you the feeling that you have learned something about yourself, or it should make you think... or something. ---just like a great movie or book would. (key word: great, not just good)

If there is something wrong with you, I'm in a lot of trouble myself. It's not quite the same as reading a book, but I do play a lot of games.
There are lots of reasons people think gaming is shameful for an adult. First and foremost, it's time consuming and most people assume if you weren't playing games you'd be doing something productive instead. The word "game" is generally associated with children, so there's another reason it's considered childish. Not to mention that most non-gamers have no clue about games aside from what they hear on the news.
Just ignore those people. There's nothing wrong with gaming unless you let it interfere with your everyday life.

No, not at all, my grandpa plays video games, and he's 66! I play them whenever I've finished all my homework, chores etc... (my parents have me read at least 1 book a week so my brain isn't completely fried) And I don't plan on stopping just because of the coming of age! If it keeps you entertained and you enjoy playing them, then it's not weird at all! It doesn't mean that you're stupid, in means that you like to have fun. =)

No. There's nothing weird about it. I'm 32 and still play video games. My sister is 40 and plays them, and my mom is over 50 and plays them all the time. Oh and my husband is 35 and play them too. They're just a form of entertainment like watching tv or whatever else might interest you.

I'm 38 and I'm a gaming junkie..that's probably why I design games now. So no, that's not weird at all, because demographics show that the average gamer is about 30.
