Get a manual. This is an old car and the system is very simple compared to today's vehicles. You can probably even buy a new one with late-day technology for cheaper than trying to do it yourself.

If you don't feel competent enough to do it, perhaps you should bring it to someone who is..
If a car has just basic electrical, its the VW bug. But it still is a big undertaking not to be taken lightly. There is a lot of keeping in mind where it all goes. And how it all works.....Understanding the theory is more than half the battle.
