I Think you mean "altimeter"
The altimeter is an instrument which measures vertical distance with respect to a reference level. The altimeter is an instrument that measures the altitude of the land surface or any object such as an airplane. Louis Paul Cailletet was the French physicist who invented the altimeter and the high-pressure manometer.

yup, must mean altimeter. Instrument used to determine altitude, but for accuracy, must be compensated for variations in atmospheric pressure. The funniest reference I ever saw to this instrument was in a book about the Flying Tigers who ran a tremendously dangerous airlift from Burma into China during WWII. The pilots had to fly some seriously decrepit planes over some very high mountains in all sorts of lousy weather. At one point, semi-lost in clouds, the pilot turned to the co-pilot and asked if he knew where the hell they were. The co-pilot answered , "I don't know, but according to the altimeter, we're about ten feet underground."

Not a standard military abbreviation for altimeter -- which is a device measuring static air pressure. Try asking spell check to spell altemter
and you'll get altimeter.

This is only a guess (based on your spelling) but I think you mean 'altimeter' âº
It's an instrument that uses air pressure to measure the altitude above sea level.
