Cent means 100, so one dollar is one hundred cents...look at some examples....century= 100 years...centimeter 1/100th of a meter....centipede, an arthropod with 100 legs (really they don't). Many English words use number prefixes such as uni or mono meaning one, bi or di meaning two, tri meaning three and so one...look at the word cycle...it means wheel or circle, so a bicycle has two wheels and a tricycle has three. These number prefixes are from both Latin and Greek. Unfortunately in America and England many of the weights and measurements are in customary fashion, ie...16 ounces = 1 pound, but in much of the world, the metric system is used so we express speed at kph (kilometers per hour)...a kilometer is 1000 meters.
