When you purchase a "share" of a company, you are committing your money to that company's financial future. There is no "guarantee" that you will profit from your investment; but, if you invest in companies that have been "historicaly" profitable, your money will at best remain stable.

Before investing thousands of dollars you have saved, talk to trusted friends who have invested their money and have realized a significant return on their investment. Check out investment clubs. Many only require a minimum ($500) investment; yet your return may be 50 times that. You must do some research to maximize your money. No one can guarantee you will profit from an investment. You can, however, plan the minimization of your loss.

Yahoo Answers is not the place to be downloading a seminar on the explaination and art of investing--it is simply too complex in the overall to cover here---but, I can let you in on a couple of things that will at least set you in motion with more info than you evidently have at the moment......
When a company decides to "go public" they will offer "shares" in their business to investors---those "shares" are a "shared piece of that particular business -- like a piece of what the company does---when you buy shares--you are buying into a piece of that company's business......
If the business does very well-- the value of the shares go up
If they don't do so well---the value of the shares go down

There are company's that do the work of buying and selling shares for people as individual investors--they are known as brokers---or investment agents---they make their money usually on getting a per centage of the money that exchanges hands when the stock (or shares) are bought or sold...There are a lot of them and there are good--bad--very good --and very bad ones in this field---when investing YOUR money--best be looking for a very good one---try Merrill-Lynch-----Smith --Barney ---or Chas Swabb---all of these are top notch and have rock solid history--and ---when approached by the new investor -- they will be thrilled to help you learn and understand very single facet of the business of Stock investments-- it is a part of what they do--- Hope this gives you somewhere to start and I hope it does you well !!!!.
