I'd like to add heat to my new home and I'm wanting something small for emergency power outages or "pleasure" heating. I'd prefer something that was small, but maybe had an optional cooking space (like those old small cook stoves you see sometimes), that didn't take up too much space, and cost less than $500 dollars.

Thanks! :D

These are items that you can often buy used. Watch the classified ads in your local newspaper as well as any "Trader" type classified magazines available in your area. Flea markets are also an option.

Keep an eye out for estate and farm auctions in your area. Many times, wood stoves are found in rural and farm sales. The contents of auctions are usually listed in the newspaper and many auctioneers maintain websites where they post pictures and additional listings of upcoming auctions.

It may not happen overnight, but you should have no real trouble finding something within your budget.

By the way, the buying, selling, and restoration of old wood and coal stoves is a bigger business than most people realize. Type "vintage wood stoves" (include the quotation marks in the search box) in the Yahoo search box and explore the results. I think you will be surprised.

Good luck with your search for a wood stove.
