I think many people want to help you with a question when the question is a serious one in the answerers view, but of course not all people to this, some just want the points. Some of the serious answerers also sometimes answer questions for the points but they are generally the silly questions then there are some people who just want to quarrel and debate everything under the sun. But all in all the whole discourse is for entertainment and amusement.

I can't speak for others, but I use two basic criteria for picking the questions that I answer:
1.) The Asker's sincerity.
2.) My ability to answer the question.
However, sometimes I will answer other questions too just for the heck of it. I mean, sometimes the question is either so stupid or just plain funny, I have to write my 10 cents worth (I never give just 2 cents, sometimes only 5 cents, but never only 2 cents).
I also try to provide links whenever possible, so that the Asker has access to the additional information if they want it.
I notice some people just post a link and that's about it, when they answer a question.
I have noticed there are an awful lot of questions being asked on here, where all the people have to do is take a little of the information they are giving us and put it into their search engine and they could find the answer the same way that I do for them. If these questions are being asked by the younger generation I'm very concerned that they are getting lazy and that they will not know how to do their own research when they get older.
The same goes for the math and other homework related questions we get on here, as well as some of the programming questions.
I attended Devry about 14+ years ago and I was in the Information Systems Program, which means I was learning programming and there were some students in the class that would copy other student's programs if they let them.
Anyway, I hope this answers your question.

I can tell that you graduated college for writing, I'm working on that as a freshman.I do agree with you that when people use this service, that they are looking to get some sort of entertainment, that entertainment may vary though. Some people could be looking for the latest tabloid scandal, others might want to voice their opinion about our government. I also agree with you when you say that some people have genuine concern for your question, and would like to voice a help full opinion. Of course because this is a public server, everyone with all types of academic back rounds voice their opinion. Some may be genuinely intellectual, while others never even finished high school. I think Yahoo Answers shows the true spirit of man. This is voicing what matters most, opinions. Here you can see where people really come from, without ever meeting one-another. However that depends if the person is lying or not.

I concur with you because you, like me, are also a very individual individual. You see, when I was born they broke the mold (and beat the hell out of the moldmaker!).
I have noticed that all too often when someone is asking for medical advice (say, they suspect a heart attack is coming on), there is always the "online doctor" who just tells them it's probably nothing and to take two aspirin.
Someone needs to take that 'online doctor's' computer and stick it where the sun doesn't shine and tell him to take two aspirins for pain.
When it comes to something serious, I always tell them to get a professional opinion from a qualified physician rather than from somebody in here who really isn't a doctor but did stay in a Holiday Inn Express once.
If it's obvious that humor is present, I respond with a quick retort, a poke to the ribs, a nose-tweeking, then a smack to the back of the head.
That being said I must ask "What was your question again?"

It all depends. I discovered this site recently and I must say I got addicted quickly.
I like to impart my knowledge when I can. (I hang out in the philosophy and books section as I'm an intellectual and these are things I tend to know about). I also like to give my advice to people who seem distraught or have psychological problems, as I feel I'm doing alright and I can sometimes lend a helping hand. Once in a while, I goof off and I see a question that looks silly and give a silly answer to it.
As for points, I'm not that worried about them. It's kind of cool when you get close to a level and you just do stuff to accumulate points (I shamelessly vote for myself when questions go to voting). It reminds me of my D&D playing days. LOL.
I think they did a really good job setting this thing up. There's a nice balance of liberty and rules that makes it real interesting,
Cheers!

The ego takes the areas it likes and ignores or minimizes something. The regulation of appeal is ultimate understood in context of the extra desirable image. the placement is the human ego is only searching for counsel on a thank you to manage the universe to fulfill it is perceived desires and desires. Remaking the regulation of appeal in it is own image, the human ego compartmentalizes the universe and tries to chop up the regulation of appeal from the full, discarding the areas and products it would not desire to handle. it quite is like taking a eye-catching tapestry and focusing on a single small component of it then pulling all the threads of the colors you like attempting to pass them on your favorite spot. If powerful the full tapestry is replaced and the attention-catching trend is disturbed. Now think of you and the tapestry are related to a stronger intelligence that would regulate the trend and direct your efforts via inspiring desires and options. in case you have controlled to delude your self into thinking you're become autonomous from this extra desirable intelligence then you definately will have faith which you're manipulating the tapestry via employing the regulation of appeal. this might make you sense efficient for a mutually as. while you're conscious of your connection to the extra desirable intelligence you will desire to not be all that attracted to pulling each and every of the gorgeous colorations to you. lots extra desirable wonders are your important concentration. The popularization of the regulation of appeal isn't a bad component and might do no harm. It finally ends up only being yet differently human beings can exhibit precisely the place they're in understanding. the place we are is precisely the place we would desire to be.

Yahoo answers says that "you share your knowledge and you may make some ones day"
This is the motto which makes most people to answer questions. Some people take life light heatedly. They like to give jovial answers which can cheer you up.What I have noticed is mostly people reply with a desire to help.
Ultimately that is the aim of Yahoo answers is it not?

completely case by case. Sometimes, I really want to help. Other times I'm trying to be clever. Other times, a question or post gets me mad enough to say something after all. Definitely, if I think a question is witty I'm more likely to answer, or at least look closer.
