I like Depeche Mode too, but they just didn't attain the mega-pop stardom that Duran did (DM is much better, though).
there were many great bands in the '80s.
I'm not picking people like Cyndi Lauper or Madonna because they were phenonena unto themselves.
Bands who also got through the '80s with little more than one good album also don't get my thums up according to your question.
