is there any reason to get married these days?

if we can just sleep around, or have hook ups, move in with him/her, or be 'partners' for 10 years without being married.....are there any sensible reasons left to get married?

Well, there's a huge difference between marriage and sleeping around, etc., though perhaps it can be not as obvious. You see, when people make such a commitment as marriage, they actually claim they're going to spend their lives together. This doesn't allow thinking that they can find someone better, there's no such thing left. They don't look around.
I think you ask this question, because you haven't met a person, whom you'd be able to sacrifice your freedom for, yet. When you meet such a person, you won't even have to ask this question, it'll come naturally. Because marriage is a consequence of love. And to love somebody is not about not being able to live without them. It's when you can live without him or her, you just don't want to.

Two different things I see here-

1. Being a couple dedicated to each other.

I just saw a brilliant documentary on Black Bear Commune and after a period of not allowing partners they found most people WANTED to pair off and stay with the one person. I like to think its inbuilt.

2. Being married.

Personally, if you are not religious and if your laws see no difference between living together and being married - I don't see the point in it. I'm married because I felt that a ceremony where my guy and I proclaimed to everyone we were going to work together as a couple was important to me and I was Christian at the time and so involving God in it seemed the right thing to do.
