It's a very bad idea to only keep one rat, so I highly recommend getting him a same sex rat friend. Rats are very social and need another rat to play with when you can't. They also groom each other and will wrestle with each other. They also cuddle up and sleep together.
I also highly recommend a large wheel made specifically for rats, they need that excersize and it keeps them entertained.
You can take a toilet paper roll, put a treat in the middle of it and fold over the ends, it makes the rat have to work at getting the treat and will keep him busy. You can also put cut up old towel in their as he will use it to sleep in or even to play with sometimes.
Make sure he has something to chew on because rats like to chew on things, just make sure any chewing blocks you get are safe for rats. I also recommend getting a salt lick and mineral block, a lot of rat owners say their rats don't even use them but mine absolutely love the salt lick and mineral block. The mineral blocks you can buy in some interesting shapes and flavors, they go nuts over them!
Make sure the cage is large enough though, they need a lot of space to roam around in since rats are such curious little animals. Another thing you may learn is that rats have a lot of personality for such a small animal.
But first, you really should buy another male rat, he needs a friend to play with since you can't always be there to play with him. Nothing can replace the bond between two cage mates.

I have owned lots of rats ~ awesome pets! One of the best things about rats is you don't have to get too expensive, rats aren't picky about their toys. Just know this, rats are thinkers, they figure stuff out and they also need to chew. You can get real creative with figuring out items for your rat to interact with.
I always gave the empty roll of paper towel (the center), pieces of wood, empty containers (just be careful of what was in the containers).
When I had rats I usually had two (same sex), so they could keep each other company. They're cage/container was cleaned every other day so I would put more food in it than they could eat, formulated feed for rodents and whatever I was eating (just not the bad stuff).
They love shiny things and costume jewerly was one of their favorites.
There have been times that my rats could have free run of the house, if you can do this, do, you will be amazed at the items they find on their own, they will try to make them a nest out of their enclosure and will start taking things from your house to their nest, this is how you find out what your rat likes the most.
Joey was a pet rat of mine that when he passed away at age 3 he was almost 3 feet long (tail included), and he loved money, if he found any (silver or bill) he would take it to his nest.
Rats can get kinda nasty, but if you stay on top of them you can keep them and their (and yours) environment clean and sanitary.
Do enjoy your pet rat ~ Best of Luck!

The most important recreational equipment for a rat is a running wheel. Get one that is plenty big, as many rats will use it so much that they will deform their backs running on a too-small wheel! Rats also need t chew. If he's in a metal cage he'll chew the bars, and he'll probably chew the wheel. You can give him other things to chew also. Take him out and play with him too. But do get him a wheel. (If the wheel squeaks, oil it with vaseline.)

Set it unfastened. If it comes back to you, cherish it. If no longer, hunt it down and kill it. (basically kidding) I had a unfastened-roaming guinea pig in my abode. It replace into so lovable. every time he replace into on the pass he might squeak. He'd bypass from under the mattress to the subsequent room, squeak-squeak-squeaking with each and every step. And the poop basically vaccuums suited up as quickly as this is dried. No biggie. He/it replace into very conscious of affection. I sense there may be a parental obstruction on your thought to enable him out of his cage. if so, i assume there is not any longer plenty you're able to do different than take him out of his cage and puppy him as much as attainable. relish!

Get a huge cage and put some toys in it. My cousin's really likes bird toys.. like little bells and rolling balls. Try those and mix them up. Also, try getting those soft rope, bendable perches. They love climbing those.
