Thats the point of search engines, Again one fault of earch engines are that they cannot guarantee safety of the sites displayed. For example, If u search for desktop wallpapers, 60 - 70% of the search results will have sites which can potentially screw up your pc. So there comes need to install some plugins from say, McAfee siteadisor for safer browsing. So, Local website directories still have a chance, if they can ensure safer sites in them. Any search engine, now existing, cannot guarantee the site safety.

That depends on the individual searching.

Most people will use Google or Yahoo to find what they're looking for instead of opening a browser and going straight to a local web directory. With the search engines offering local listings, I personally don't go to local website directories.

If you have a business and you're thinking about putting your site on a directory (that you have to pay for), I would rather start by getting traffic through other means (search engine optimization, ppc, & other free online strategies).

If you're an owner of a local directory, or thinking about starting one, you have to optimize it for the search engines so that your directory could be found and used.

I don't foresee local website directories overcome the usage of the search engines.
