I just saw the premiere of "Ugly Betty" tonight. I can't believe how totally DIFFERENT America Ferrera looks, compared to how she looked in the movies "Real Women Have Curves" and, to a lesser degree, "Sisterhood of the Travelling Pants" (she wasn't quite as overweight there, however).
Anyway, it looks like America on Ugly Betty must have lost a LOT of weight! She used to be a definite BBW, at least to me she was large enough to qualify for that term. Now, however, she looks almost like a different person! Her face as well as her body are so much smaller! I hope she's not falling prey to the Hollywood fixation with skinny actresses. :(
Anyone know if America was "expected" to lose weight for this role?

This show sounds like a spin off of The Devil Wears Prada, only that the characters are different in weight. It does irritate me though that in Prada, Miranda(Hathaway) was a size 6 and in the fashion world it's the new 14....And in Ugly Betty, Betty(Ferrera) is suppose to be chubby but isn't. It is nerve wrecking how the more skinny you look the more you're 'in'. I'm a female in my early 30's who's happy to be 130. I don't think looking like a skeleton with skin is the new fashion trend.
But see Prada. It's exactly the same thing. The question is, how are they going to extend Ugly Betty? I don't think you can.
It's just pathetic on how these shows are basting everything about looks when there's more important issues are going on in the world than looks.

The show is not a spin off of the Devil wears Prada. It's a remake of a Colombian soap opera, it's the AMERICAN version I guess you could say.But anyway, yeah I noticed she lost a lot of weight. Did anyone see her in that Disney Channel movie about cheerleaders a couple years ago....she was a bit bigger then and she would've been considered overweight.

On Real Women have curves she was proportionate. She wasn't really fat. I think she probably lost 20 pounds. She was on The View today and she still looked chubby. She is really beautiful. And I don't think she is crash dieting.

She did. She also looks young playing Betty.
I thought she was only about 25.

Not only did she lose weight, she cut her hair and is wearing a wig! Did you see her on Oprah last week....MUCH thinner than even in tonight's episode AND a short cute haircut. Not so sure you can call her "ugly" the way she looked on Oprah.

i dont know--ive never seen her on tv before this or in movies-but i think she looks great and is just the right weight--and i like her show-i think its going to be terrific!
