Haebius Corpus - or the right for an individual to petition a court (pleaing one's case) is an inalienable right that separates the United States and other Democracies from dictatorship and oligarchy. Right now the US government (both parties) have overwhelmingly supported the right to maintain torture as the means for achieving an end. And have made a resolution that would not allow prisoners of war to plea a case.

How do you think this is being viewed by the rest of the world?

Do you think this might perpetuate more terror acts?

Does it strike you as funny that we are fighting a war to instill democracy in one country, while removing a core function of democracy at home?

THIS IS NOT A DEM OR REPUBLICAN THING it is ALL government, so please keep ideological rants to a low roar.

Yes, this is a shame and its unfair.

The key word is "suspects"!!! They are suspected of the deed, nothing hard core or solid evidence, because then they would be called "terrorists".

They have a right as a human being to plea their case, and fight for their inocense, esp. if they are inocent.

I think the rest of the world frowns on this. For ever we have always been thought to respect human rights and have always set the example in regards to the Geniva Conv. Thats what made us so respectable and nobel. Not any more, now we are just as bad as everyone else. These "suspects" have no rights, no privillages to fight for their inocense, there for we are no better than the terrorist themselves or those who ignore the Geniva Conv. I think this is appauling for the U.S. to sink to this level.

Naturally this will perpetuate more terrorist acts, and will naturally gain more support form other Muslim, Islamic and Middle Eastern Countries, becuase of the unethical treatment and loss of human rights to right of a fair trail for these "suspects". This will empower and united people who were unsure of the U.S. with the terrorist groups.

I find it extreemly ironic that we are forcing democracy on those who we are now occupy down their throats, when our democracy is begining to shape into a dictatorship. We are loosing more and more rights every day, and sometimes I can't believe the validation they use to take them away from its people.

This administration monopolizes fear to manipulate its people into submission. They do it so well.

Well I don't disagree that in many respects our freedoms are being limited, however not in the way you're talking about. The bill you're referring to is simply a bill for interrogating terrorists, the accusation of torture is a conspiracy of corruption by the left, which is flawed in that, if it was true, we wouldn't have had to bring it to congress.

I'm not concerned with the government being strong in protecting its own national security, with the proper checks to stop the abuse of that power, (such as guns in the hands of the populace), however, there are other rights abuses that have taken place, for example, as I've recently discovered, prostitution is illegal, as are the use of certain drugs. A just government should not have it within its capacity to legislate against any action that suffers no victim. The concept of a free state is that we all have the right to pursue our own happiness however the devil we see fit even if we're dead wrong, so long as we don't infringe on the rights of others. Since this principle has been forgotten as the fundamental core of the US's values, at least, as reflected by the current state of our legislation, then it's safe to say the only thing protecting our rights is the incompotence of the people trying to infringe upon them.

Freedom is being eroded right across the world by governments who claim they are spreading democracy. I don't think that true democracy really exists. It seems to be another form of dictatorial religion. (democracy as practiced today)

************I don't know why I keep reading this democrat drivle...one part is the same as the other...but the democrats are all high and mighty about freedom...that's why they tried to keep my man Ralph Nader off the ballot 2X...

Every human being deserves a say in the decisions that affect their lives and not be subject to the will of another. Therefore, we should work to increase public participation at every level of government and to ensure that our public representatives are fully accountable to the people who elect them. It's been going on longer than you know. Little snippets of freedom taken away so it's not so noticable. That is....until that maniac George Bush Jr. took office. It doesn't get anymore obvious. Goes to show you how much "freedom" we have.

It is my major concern at his point in my life. The Constitution has been overthrown, our power-mad government has run amok, and a great many of our fellow Americans have been hypnotized into applauding this Treason!

Actually, I agree with it. We do it ANYWAY and declare that we don't. I think it's time we step up to the plate and be HONEST. What really bothers me is the House of Reps approving warrantless wire tapping.
