Tam is a Scottish hat usually plaid with a pompom on top. It's shaped like a dome or round spaceship. Check this website for photo (http://www.greatscotshop.com/headgear.htm).

There is also the knitted or crochet version too. You see women or kids wearing them in the winter. You could probably find a knitting or crochet pattern with a picture of the hat.

A beret is flat with a little brim around the front sort of like the baseball cap but the brim is thinner. It shaped like a Frisbee. Alot of stereotypical crooks wear them in movies or tv shows. George Burns used to wear it alot. Check this website for a photo (http://www.fotosearch.com/CSK188/ks10207/)

Happy Knitting;)

A tam is a more modern term. The Scottish Bonnet is a large round circle sewn to a band that fits around the head, it doubled as a forage bag. The band fits horizontally on the head and the gathered bag is pulled to the left side. The military bonnet had a black cockade and a piece of bearskin on the right side. A clan chieftan wore a hawk feather in his cockade as a mark of rank. Calling it a Tam started in the 1790's and it was a derogatory term instead of calling it a Bonnet that was started by the British. The toorie on top is to keep the fairies from sucking your soul out the top of your head. A beret is a small circle sewn to another circle with a circle cut out for your head and lies very flat.

I don't know why they are used interchangeably. They are not the same thing.

The tam is a tall, round knitted cap, which is often brightly coloured.

Origins
The tam comes from Scotland and Ireland. The name likely derives from the British colonial era, after the Scottish national cap, the tam o'shanter. The military version of this cap is the Balmoral.

A beret is a soft round cap, usually of wool felt, with a flat crown, which is worn by both men and women.

A Tam is a Tam'o'Shanter, and refers to a Scottish hat, reputedly worn by said character, it tends to be larger than a beret, and sports a toorie (pompom) on the top. It is made of wool. A beret, is French in origin, and tends to just have a small tag on top, and is made from wool felt.

In Scotland, nowadays, most items of informal headwear can be referred to as a tammie, in honour of the tam'o'shanter.

Okay, calm down. First of all it's airborne, one word. Alright we'll start off simple, Rangers are an elite light infantry unit. It's the 75th Ranger Regiment with it's hq at for benning georgia. They are experts at both conventional warfare, and unconventional. Capable of being deployed within 18 hours of a crisis, they are Americas most elite infantry unit. Their training is very different for every soldeir in it. For enlisted soldiers E-1 to E-4 (private-specialist) you must attend airborne jump school then the Ranger indoctrination program, aka RIP, for enlisted NCO's and officers you must attend Ranger orientation program, aka ROP. These are the two ways into the regiment, and are both physically and mentally demanding. They both last 4 weeks and have an attrition rate of about 50%. Oh and rangers wear tan berets, not black. Green berets or special forces are masters of unconventional warefare, and have special training of their own. Most soldeirs becoming SF are already NCO's and have spent quite a bit of time in the army in a combat arms mos. Their training is much longer taking a total of about 1.5 years to 2 years to complete. The first phase of training is much like hellweek, taking about a month to complete. However SF training is not as physically demanding as Seal school or ranger training. However mentally it is probablly the most challenging in the Army, possibly the entire military. They work in much smaller teams(12 men.) and little is known about their missions. Most of the time blending in with the locals.

A tam is worn by a Scot, a beret is worn by a French person. If you're the one making or wearing it, you get to call it whatever you like. ;-)
