How do you get the odor of sour milk out of carpet?

Question

My 3 year old grandaughter took a gallon of milk and poured it all onto the carpet in a 18 inch circle. I have tryed steam cleaning it and I,ve tryed Pinesol,Gain laundry soap,Dawn dish washing soap,Fabreeze and still it smells really bad and its making the whole room reak. I aloud the carpet to dry after each cleaning attempt but it smells like soured milk and I,m lost and I need some good advice .Has anyone else ever had this happen to them and if so what did you use to clean it up with.

I know the milk did reach the pad and pulling the carpet up is not an option.

I had a pumpkin that rotted on carpet. Nothing that i used to get the odor out helped for more than a few hrs. I called a professional carpet service and they were willing to sell me a small bottle of an odor removal product. I used it many times over a period of 2 weeks and finally when the carpet backing became soaked,the odor went away. It wasn't fun and didn't seem like it was going to work at first. Also there is a product you can find in pet stores. It is called Simple Solution Stain and Odor Remover. It works on food products (organic) odors and is save for carpets.

If it was a small spill, and it was caught right away ( like 4 oz or less) the liquid could be sucked up (or toweled up) and then a good cleaning with 50-50 tide water soultion scrubbed into to the fibres & pad could handle the problem, but the smell will only get worse & the bacteria & mold that is growing in & under the carpet is a health hazard for you & your family. If new capeting is not an option for you right now, you might want to consider pulling up the old carpeting scrubbing the spot where the milk was and painting the floor ( if it is not hardwood) if it is hardwood, you could consider refinishing it.

if she poured that much milk on the rug, then the only option is to remove the carpet, no cleaning agents will clean the bacterial growth that has been festering in the carpet. That orange glo hardwood floor refinisher is GREAT, and not too expensive. My 3 yr old popped off the top of his sippy cup and spilled that on the carpet.I was able to clean it with several applications of tide- water solution, it was less than 4 oz of milk & it took two months of daily scrubbing to remove the smell. I also left baking soda on the stain over night each night to absorb the odor, but with a gallon of milk, there really is no other option than removing the carpet.

A really good way that works WELL (which sounds crazy and doesn't stain) is coffee grounds. Liberally sprinkle the grounds all over the area... leave for an hour and vacuum them up! works like a charm. I had a baby that was a vomiter... I dealt with a lot of milk on carpets!

Everything that you used to clean up the smell, unfortunately locked in the smell. Take a juicy lemon and rub into the area and then clean with a damp white rag. Allow to dry, if this doesnt work you could clean the area with a mixture of vinegar and water. Milk is an acid based stain and must be treated with an acid based cleaner.

Pour baking soda on the spill location and let it sit for a day or so, then vacuum it up. This is non toxic. You might have to do it two or three times to get all the smell out. Good luck.

Carpets/Upholstery:
1) A great non-toxic carpet stain remover is club soda. Soak spot immediately with soda and blot until the stain is gone.
2) Pet Urine on Carpets: Dab area with toweling to absorb as much as possible, wash spot with liquid dish detergent, and rinse with 1/2 cup vinegar diluted in 1 qt warm water. Lay towels or paper towels over the spot and weight down to absorb excess moisture. Let stand 4 to 6 hours, then remove toweling, brush up nap and allow to dry completely. Use an electric fan to speed drying.
3) Red wine stains can be removed from carpet by rubbing baking soda in and vacuuming.
4) Sprinkle cornstarch onto carpet, vacuum.
5) To remove grease spots from carpets, first sop up the liquid with a sponge, then rub a liberal amount of baking soda into the spot. Let it absorb overnight. Next day, remove the excess and vacuum the area.
6) To remove grease spots from carpets, first absorb excess with a sponge, then rub a liberal amount of corn starch into the spot. Let sit overnight, then vacuum.
7) Dry cornstarch sprinkled on rug and vacuumed.

4 cups baking soda or cornstarch
35 drops Eucalyptus essential oil
30 drops Lavender essential oil
25 drops Rosewood essential oil
or any combination of your favorite essentail oils
Measure 4 cups of baking soda into a bowl, add essential oils. Break up any clumps that form, stir until well mixed. Before vacuuming sprinkle powder from a shaker type can or jar. Let it sit on the carpet for about 15 minutes then vacuum.

9) Herbal Carpet Freshener
1 cup baking soda, 1/2 cup lavender flowers
Crush the lavender flowers to release their scent. Mix well with baking soda and sprinkle liberally on carpets. Vacuum after 30 minutes.

I would: Sprinkle it with baking soda and vinegar, work in with bristle brush and leave for a day or so. Clean as usual. Repeat till odor is gone.
