I have been out of work for 2 years now and am in the process of trying to get on disability. My medical bills have gotten awful and we are barley making it... some times we are lucky to just get groceries. I have never asked for help... but it has just gotten to hard... is it legal to ask for money from other people to help with money? This is so emabassing for me.

Been there, done that. My dad is disabled and my stepmom just had a major back operation. I'm the only one working. The best places to go are Churches. Not only do they have food pantries, but they can also have offerings to take up money for you. You can also go to the foodstamp office nearest you and they can help point you in a good direction, too. Good luck and Blessed Be.
You'll be in my prayers.

You can start by checking to see if there are any community services organizations (nonprofits) in your area - they have case management specialists who can refer you to government and other assistance.

You can also take a look at the Catalog of Federal Domestic Assistance to point in the direction of organizations for which you can apply for assistance - http://12.46.245.173/cfda/cfda.html

What This Site Can Do For You: This web site gives you access to a database of all Federal programs available to State and local governments and domestic public, quasi-public, and private profit and nonprofit organizations and institutions; specialized groups; and individuals.

You can search this database to find assistance programs meeting your requirements and for which you are eligible. You can then contact the office that administers the program and find out how to apply.

Also available on this site are several aids to guide you in the writing of a proposal to apply for assistance. Browse the CFDA Contents page to learn more about them.

best of luck to you.

There are some churches who give away free food. Also, check with your local chapter of United Way to see what kind of help you could get there and see if they can also put you in contact with your local food bank. If you are disabled, then see if UW will help you get on the Meals on Wheels program where they bring a lunch to you every day.

It is legal as long as you tell someone exactly why you need the money. The worst you can get is a no. Have you spoken with the people you owe money to? They may help a little.

It is certainly legal to ask for anything you want. As others have said, you cannot always count on the generosity of strangers though.
