I am needing to know how to calculate how many feet and/or yards of concrete I will need for a foundation or room addition.

To pour a slab which is usually 4" thick and you need to know how many yards of concrete to order.

width x length x thickness = cubic feet

cubic feet divided by 27 = cubic yards

Example 20' x 30' x 4" = 240' 240' divided by 27 = 8.88 yards of concrete.

8.88 yards of concrete would do a 4" slab for a 20 x 30 space.

You must also consider though if you will be putting in a footing. I would reccomend that you do. For a single story structure a 18" deep by 24" footer will do just fine. I would use 5/8 rebar in the footing with 2500 psi mud (concrete). I would also put down a plastic barrier and wire mesh before you pour the mud on the addition.

Hope this helps :)

Length X Width = square feet X thickness of the slab ( 4"=.33, 3"=.25, 6"=.5) =cubic feet . Use the same formula to figure the cubic footage of the footings. Figure the total cubic feet needed and divide by 27 to get cubic yards , then round up to the next yard to make sure you have enough. I always make a frame out of 2X4's with 18" square spaces to pour the excess concrete in to make stepping stones.

Are you going to pour a slab? If so measure the length and width and height and multiply together and that's how many square feet the space is....

Example: An area 4 foot long and 4 foot wide is 16sf.

If you are only pouring around the perimeter then you need to do the same thing only on four sides. Measure each side like its it's own space and add all four totals together to get your total.

(If this confuses you I'll be happy to elaborate more.)

multiply length times width times depth.
remember when buying concrete
a bag of concrete make a good foundation about the size of the bag
foundations are usually about as thick as the bag of concrete

How long X how high X how wide gives cubic feet.

Divide that by 27 to get cubic yards

Don't forget....... Your footings will be bigger than the foundation...
