what kind of things work best besides a filter to get things going in a salt water tank? Ive heard of "feeder fish" or whatever. Any live specimens I should put in ASAP once the water clears a little

Buy a sail fin molly. Put it in a bucket and add a teaspoon of salt twice a day until it is the same salinity as your tank. You can also buy a raw shrimp from you supermarket. When it is finished decomposing, change 20% of the water and your tank is good.
Live rock also will do the trick as it already has the necessary bacteria and life on it.
Just keep an eye on your readings at all times - and have saltwater ready if you need it as it takes some time to mix it.

Are you talking about getting the cycle started? I wouldn't advise any type of algae eater(don't know if there is a sw algae eater, sure there is), if it's a new tank, there isn't any algae for them to eat. And, snails and other inverts won't be able to handle the stress of a tank cycling. I know I put the live rock in first, but I can't remember how long I waited before adding that.
