The problem is that you can't say, 'Hey, what would happen if you could go faster than the speed of light?' because that's physically impossible to our current level of technology. One of the reasons that prevent any object with a mass going at or faster than the speed of light is that the mass is not constant - it increases as velocity increases and it goes to infinity at the speed of light. So that eventually you need an infinite amount of energy to accelerate infinite mass past the speed of light.

OK, having put physics to rest for a moment, I am reminded of the quotation "What the mind of man can conceive, the mind of man can achieve". This is a quote from Napoleon Hill, and taken slightly out of context, but illustrates the drive, determination, and imagination of our species which makes me believe that nothing is impossible.

"Backwards" relative to what?

According to Albert's equations, as we approach the speed of light, time slows down until, at the speed of light, time stops altogether. Anything faster than the speed of light and, perhaps, time might reverse itself.

Since the speed of light cannot be reached by any mass, the question is only a mind exercise.

no, there is no backwards, it is simply traveling forwards ina different direction, however at 90% of the speed of light your relative time would be different to the time of your starting point. So that if you did a round trip in 100 years of starting point time it would only be 14 years of your own subjective time, which would be a form of time travel
