You know how most (or all) states have slogans? Does America have a slogan?

If not, what would you vote for?

I always thought it was "E Pluribus Unum" myself--"For the Many (become) One" as a rough translation....but these days there is some irony to that one, huh? :)

Some folks I know in my building swear by "In God we Trust", though I am not one of them....still a believer in Separation of Church and State.

"Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness" is another good one even though some of your One Percenter Media types have hijacked the living crap out of that one....

But I think you get the point. States have slogans because the idea is, if you don't like or agree with the slogan (or culture *behind* the slogan) of any given State, you can always move to a new state, but...

We are rather stuck with the National one, and rather than have people up in arms about to kill each other over being left out, we simply don't have *one* Official Buzzword of America.

(not that the idea works, these days we are up in arms anyway, but still...)

Hope this helps. :)

Motto Of The United States

Well there's no official state slogan, but if we're to concieve a slogan best describing the ideas upon which it was founded, not counting slavery since the founders who wrote the ideas we look at in fact opposed slavery(Thomas Jefferson, after contemplating the nature of freedom in writing certain documents, resolved to release his slaves)

I imagine most simply, a slogan depicting the principles upon which the state of the country was intended, there were many principles the founders had that were great, but all of them came down to ideas for the preservation of one, simple principle

"Freedom."

If only the modern political arena valued it as much as they did.

The official motto of the United States is:

E Pluribus Unum which means "From many we are now one", or literally "From many, one"

It reffers to the union of states, and later has been applied to the immigration boost.

American Slogans

E pluribus unum is a national motto of the United States of America. Translated from Latin, it means "From many, one" or "Out of many, one." It referred to the integration of the 13 independent colonies into one united country, and can now be additionally seen to have a great metaphoric meaning, given the pluralistic nature of American society. The motto was selected by the first Great Seal committee in 1776, at the beginning of the American Revolution. In 1956, In God we Trust was added as another national motto.
