There were a number of related branches in the evolutionary tree. Homo Erectus, Habilas, sapiens. For whatever reason, we were the only branch to survive. Many of these earlier cousins lived at the same time in the world. It is believed that all "human" life originated in the continent of Africa and then spread through Europe, Asia and finally the Americas.

African Genesis..James Leakey tells of Australopithicus Africanus, considered to be the oldest sheletal remains so far. Found in Africa. Sounds like Eden, and Eve, but I believe they called the remains Lucy. Leakey was the archaeologist responsible for this find and wrote the book about the discovery.
As for Neanderthal the suggestion is that there was no possibility of procreation, between promagnum and neanderthal, however biblically Cain slew Abel. As recurring today..huntergatherers are being uprooted and slaughtered all over the earth..farmers pay rent and Cain built the first city..the farmers daughters can be bought.
