Hmmm, that is strange because the usual protocol these days is to do an early, vaginal ultrasound. I'm surprised your doctor doesn't want to do one. I had one with this pregnacy and as they found the heartbeat she said to me, "just one heartbeat" and explained that one of the reasons they do the early ultrasound is so they can be prepared if it is twins. I'd talk to your doctor again.

You didn't mention if this was your first child or not. So I will just give you some general information. You will show ALOT sooner with second+ children than with the first, as your stomach muscles never fully recover from the stretching of previous pregnancys. It could also be that your are further along than you think, as some women experience what is called implantation bleeding, which is caused by the egg implanting in the uterus. Alot of women who experience this believe they have gotten their period when in fact they are pregnant. You could be a whole menstrual cycle further along than you think you are. Twins run along the womans side of the family, not the mans. this is because fraternal twins are caused by the mothers body releasing 2 eggs instead of just one. identical twins are just a freak of nature that occasionally happens. Identical twins are not carried in the genes. So the babys father having twins in his family would not cause you to have twins. So...you could be having twins if they run in YOUR family. Or you could just have gotten lucky and got the identical twins(from the one egg splitting in two). other than getting larger and gaining weight faster, there will be no additional symptoms if you are carrying twins. Twins tend to make your regular symptoms a bit worse, but thats it. The Dr. can also do blood tests as the pregnancy hormones will raise alot faster with twins than singleton pregnancys. If your concerned, you might want to consider switching Dr.s, as most will do the first sonogram at 8 weeks LMP.

Really there aren't any signs that you're having twins until a little later in the pregnancy... and that's the size of your belly (but not always). It usually only matters if twins run on the mother's side though (fraternal twins tend to run in families) not the fathers from what I understand. At least that's what my ob/gyn explained. Twins run on my Mom's side of the family and have for generations...

Congraulations on your pregnancy!

An abnormally growing belly is a sign, but not a sure one. Like your Dr. said, every pregnancy is different. On your next Dr.'s appointment ask for a fetal heart monitor to be done. That will determine if there are more then one heart beats inside you. If there are, then CONGRATULATIONS, your having twins...if not...then CONGRATULATIONS your still expecting a beautiful new life!

i don't know about twins......when i was pregnant with my daughter, my stomach starting showing well at about 8 weeks like i was 5 months already.....but then i didn't gain anymore until i was at least 7 or 8 months. and i just had one. but i've heard that women who are very small show very early......don't know....but the dr. gave me the 1st ultrasound at about 13 weeks (vaginal)......best of luck to you....

You might look for a different doctor. I'm pregnant with my third child and my doctor started doing ultrasounds at around 8 weeks with each.
