I think the media sometimes portrayed him as a nut job, (the baby thing) but he was an amazing conservationist and took more chances than I would but believe he was careful and knew what he was doing. Keep in mind, the way he died could have happened to anyone in the ocean. How many people have been stung by sting rays? Lots! The fact it went thru to his heart is very rare and a horrible way to die I am sure! He was funny and quirky and unfortunately, there are some wannabe guys on tv that may lead to people getting hurt because they aren't responsible but I think it is marvelous his daughter is following in his footsteps and I wish his family the best. How horrible for them all.

He was a hero . especially for the endangered animals he saved .. and he is my hero also for what he has done and it was a terrible tragic accident .. and by No means was he a 'nut job' when he had his little son in his arms.. that baby was Entirely safe !!! If Steve had lived.. he was going to be made a Professor by the University where he lived at .. i thought that was just so wonderful !!! he definitely would have totally deserved that Honor!!!!

Cyberbrat already gave my answer. He's neither nut-job nor hero/martyr. He was living the dream of almost every person there is, making a living doing what he loved to do. I would say he leans closer to the hero side of the scale, however. He did a LOT for conservation and endangered species awareness.

He was a "wildlife warrior" in our world. He gave his all to educating people about animals and our environment and saving them. He used his own money, and was completely selfless about it. No one can criticize that, because most people in the world are too selfish.
