Birds flock together to enjoy the benefit of safety. When a predator comes along, the flight of one bird will trigger the rest to take flight as well.
In flight, there is optimization against air resistance by staying within the typical V formation. Birds then take turns to be the leader in the flight

A.) Easier to confuse and escape predators when there are more of you.
B.) when they're flying the v-shape they take is actually for aerodynamic reasons, the biggest strongest one takes the lead and cuts the air current, the rest just follow in his wake.
