A.) Easier to confuse and escape predators when there are more of you.

B.) when they're flying the v-shape they take is actually for aerodynamic reasons, the biggest strongest one takes the lead and cuts the air current, the rest just follow in his wake.

to fly faster, cut back on the wind resistance, thats y they fly in that v shape or maybe for protection i dont kno..
