White tigers, do not occur in the wild. They are as a result of 'inbreeding'. Mother to son, father to daughter, etc. that causes a mutation. They are a 'cross-breed' between a Bengal tiger and a Siberian Tiger. Only about 1 in 30 births, actually survive. Mostly, due to severe birth defects, heart problems, cross-eyes, malformed heads, and sometimes severe mental 'issues', that can make them more difficult to train, and dangerous. The 'first' official 'white-tiger' was shown in Cincinnati,Ohio in 1974 (**in captivity) There have been reports dating back into the turn of the Century. So, they are not true albino's, but, rather a result of inbreeding (*which is a cruel hoax, in which, the offspring, will most likely suffer and or die)

Scientific Name White Tiger

That depends on which subspecies it belongs to. A white tiger is simply a color mutation and not a separate sub species. So a bengal white tiger will be Panthera Tigris (all white tigers in captivity today descend from a white bengal tiger that was captured in India a long time ago). If a white tiger occured in another sub-species it would carry the scientific name of that sub-species.

In general the white form of tigers are more usually Bengal Tigers, so they would be called Panthera tigris tigris, there are a total about 8 sub-species of tigers for more information see the link below:

The white tiger (also known as the Bengal tiger) is about 3 meters long, and weighs approximately 180-285 kg (400-569 LB). It’s coat lies flatter than that of the Siberian tiger, the tawny color is richer and the stripes are darker.

White tigers are white colored bengals, they are not albinos and they are not a seperate subspecies of tigers. They have blue eyes, a pink nose, and creamy white furr covered with chocolate colored stripes. White tigers are born to tigers that carry the unusual gene needed for white coloring. Wild white tigers are very rare.

Panthera tigris which doesn't necessarily mean a white one...white is just a special trait of a regular tiger.
